History of the Olympics

Historically, the origin and development of the Olympics fall into two phases, the ancient and modern games.

Historical records show that the first Olympic game can be dated back to 776 BC, which was held in the ancient Olympian plain to show the respects to the Olympian god. In ancient Greece, the Olympics played a very important role in people¡¯s life. It was held every 4 years and people from different areas of Greece took part in the competition. They competed for the final prize, an olive wreath and the winners returned to their hometown like heroes. The value of the Olympics itself endowed with special significance to the Olympic Games. It was a noble competition, an unite of the body, will and spirit of human. With the development of the Olympics, a series of procedures was being improved better and better like the standardized events schedule and the Olympic Truce. In the 18th century, the ancient Olympic Games have to be ceased after a long history about 1,200 years.

With the development of education, science and culture, each country established sports organizations in the 19th Century in Europe. Later the first International Sports Federations were founded, for instance, International Gymnastics Federation was established in 1881, and International rowing Federation and International skating Federation were established in 1892. In addition, according to the international situation at that time people need to maintain peace. Under that situation, the Olympic Games as a symbol of peace and friendship was demanded to restore.

In 1883£¬a young French educator named Pierre de Coubertin put forward a proposal to hold the competition as the Ancient Olympic Games and extended worldwide. In 1892, he visited all over the Europe trying to spread the idea of the Olympics and appeal for a revival of the Olympics. In the same year, he advocated a revival of the Olympics at the meeting of the 20th anniversary of the Founding of the Paris sports Federation. In June 1894, at the International Sports Meeting in Paris, representatives from 15 countries decided to hold the Olympics every four years. The first Olympic Games was held in Athens in Greek from April 6th, 1896 to 15th and 311 athletes from 13 countries took part in.

The Olympics held since 1896 are collectively called the modern Olympics .The most significant event in the modern Olympics is that women who are not allowed to participate are allowed. In the 9th Olympics in 1928, women were allowed to take part in the athletic contest. Another important event is the Olympic torch lighted in Athens in Greek where is the birthplace of Olympic at first, then carried to the site of the Games and lighted in the opening ceremony. From 1924, the modern Olympics can be divided into summer and winner games.
